What happens when my life on earth is over? Is eternal life something that I will experience? How do I know for sure what will happen to me when I die? There is no doubt that you have asked yourself at least one of these questions. The good news is that the Bible has the answer to all of these questions.
Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” Every single person will die a physical death one day. The Bible tells us that each individual will be judged by the choices they make. John 5:24-29 tells us those who choose to believe and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior will live forever in Heaven. Those who do not accept Him, will live in eternal damnation. In order to accept Christ, there are some realizations that need to be made.
See the love of God
The love of God is a real and amazing thing. He tells us in His Word that He loves each one of us. Actually, he loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die on a cross so we could have life everlasting in Heaven.
John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Agree that all are sinners
When Adam disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, he brought sin into the world and condemned all men to a sin nature. There is no way around it. You may be a very good person, but you are still a sinner.
Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Verify that there is a penalty
Just as a thief is penalized for his crime, sinners must pay the penalty for their sin. The Bible tells us that our penalty for our sin is death.
Romans 6:23a – “For the wages of sin is death…”
Expect your debt to be paid
That is not to say expect it arrogantly. When you check your mailbox for your bills, you do not expect them to be paid already. However, you can expect your debt for sin to be paid – because it is. Christ paid for our sins by dying on the cross.
Romans 6:23b – “…but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 5:8 – “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Decide to accept it
We all like gifts. We all really like gifts when nothing is expected in return. When someone offers us a free gift, we only have one thing to do – accept it. Christ’s death on the cross was a gift to us. The gift is eternal life in Heaven. All we have to do is accept it. Once we accept this gift, we are saved from eternal damnation.
Romans 10:9, 13 – “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Salvation comes through an inward belief and an outward confession
Romans 10:10 – “For with heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Before anything else, you must believe in your heart what the Bible says about salvation. You must believe that the Bible is God’s Word. You must believe that Jesus is God’s son. You must believe that Jesus died for your sins. You must believe that Jesus was resurrected and lives in Heaven with His Father. Without this belief, your words mean nothing. Once you believe you can confess and ask God to save you. Below is a prayer to help guide you.
“Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I deserve death as my punishment. I realize that you gave your Son to die on the cross and pay my penalty. Today, I ask that you forgive me of my sins, come into my heart, and give me an eternal home in Heaven. I accept you as my personal Lord and Savior. Amen.”
